Today we are taking a look at the “Mermaid Rosette”. I considered it “fair game” to use coffee filters as part of the project as they relate to coffee (keen grasp of the obvious!) and are extremely cost effective (as in “cheap, cheap, cheap”!).

Starbucks Mermaid Rosette

You can probably see how I put these together, here are some details and tips.

Cutting out Mermaid

Cut out the mermaid logo.

Note:  1) This Christmas mermaid is smaller than the year-round logos.   2) I would suggest cutting approx. 1/4″ around LARGER than the image you want to see/use, which I did NOT do here, so you have extra room for gluing and don’t have to glue onto your image.  [If you use the year-round logo, you may want to cut right up to the edge to make your exposed area about the size of the Christmas one.  Or not.  You decide!]

Note:  This was done with Ranger Tea Dye.  I chose to do this because I was using natural coffee filters.  If you decide you want a white filtered ornament, skip this step.

(Not shown:  Cut approx. 1 1/2 inch off the outside edge of a large filter.)

Stitch about 1/4 inch from the inside ring with a gathering stitch.

Pull up your gathers.

Form around the image and hot glue to edge.

Double Ruffle

Here you see the top and bottom layers.  If you need to, trim the edges to even out ruffles all away around.

On the front of your rosette, glue your desired color of pipe cleaner around the rosette to cover the stitching.  In this photo, you can also tell that I inked over the images.  (I think these would be darling in other color variations–in fact, you may see some here before the year is out!)  Glue a hanging string to the back. Done!
